A routine domestic flight in Iran turned into a frightening ordeal when a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 developed a serious technical problem shortly after takeoff, forcing the aircraft to turn back to the airport
What made the incident particularly alarming was what happened inside the cabin. As the aircraft experienced intense vibrations during the emergency, sections of the cabin ceiling lining broke loose and fell toward passengers, exposing parts of the structure above.

The aircraft was operating a flight from Mashhad to Kermanshah on Tuesday, September 15, when the trouble began shortly after departure from Mashhad Hashemi Nejad International Airport. Reports said the aircraft experienced a problem involving its landing gear, with some accounts saying a tyre may have burst shortly after takeoff. However, the precise cause had not been independently confirmed at the time of reporting.
The technical problem was followed by severe vibrations. Reports indicated that one engine may have been affected after debris from a damaged tyre reached it, although this explanation remains part of the early reports rather than a confirmed finding from an investigation.
Faced with the developing emergency, the pilots turned the Boeing 737 around and headed back toward Mashhad.
For passengers inside the aircraft, however, the return flight was anything but routine.
Videos released by Iranian news agency Akharin Khabar showed sections of the cabin ceiling lining falling above the passenger seats. In some areas, the damage exposed internal parts of the aircraft, creating an unsettling scene inside the cabin.
The aircraft was reportedly shaking violently as it prepared to land, adding to the panic among those onboard. Some passengers could be heard screaming and reacting emotionally as the ceiling panels came loose.
Yet despite the dramatic scenes inside the aircraft, the emergency ended without reported injuries.
The Boeing 737 successfully returned to Mashhad, where passengers and crew were able to leave the aircraft safely. According to reports citing Sepehran Airlines spokesman Hassan Jafari, the passengers were subsequently transferred to another flight bound for Kermanshah.
The runway at Mashhad airport was temporarily closed so authorities could assess the situation before it was reopened later.
The incident has attracted considerable attention because of the striking footage from inside the aircraft. A passenger normally expects turbulence to mean a few moments of shaking. Seeing parts of the cabin interior detach during an emergency is an entirely different experience.
The images also show why seemingly small mechanical problems can become serious aviation emergencies. A problem involving a wheel or tyre can potentially create additional complications, particularly if aircraft components or debris affect other systems.
However, it would be premature to draw conclusions about exactly what caused this particular incident. Aviation authorities will need to examine the aircraft and available evidence before establishing the sequence of failures.
The episode is also notable because it follows another recent incident involving a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 at Mashhad.
On August 25, another Sepehran Boeing 737-500 operating from Tehran to Mashhad reportedly veered off the runway after landing, with its nose landing gear collapsing. The 127 people aboard were reported safe, and an investigation was opened.
The two incidents occurring within a few weeks have naturally drawn attention to the airline and its aircraft, but the circumstances of each event are separate and should not be treated as evidence of a common cause without the findings of investigators.
For the passengers on the latest flight, the most important fact is that a terrifying situation ended without reported casualties.
The Boeing 737 left Mashhad expecting to complete an ordinary journey to Kermanshah. Instead, a technical emergency forced the pilots to turn back, while violent vibrations sent pieces of the cabin ceiling onto the passenger area.
The frightening images may be what people remember from the incident, but behind those images was a successful emergency response: the aircraft returned safely, passengers were evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
